This sounds like you have the offline mode enabled (Settings>Use offline mode). This feature allows you to still keep images in the database that are on a removable media. You can see more about this feature here: http://www.fstopapp.com/tutorial/#offlineMedia
Please uncheck this option if you do not want to use this feature.
